The Archbishop of Canterbury has been saying some sensible things. He speaks for many of us not least in what he has had to say about euthanasia:
On euthanasia. "I'm against it - morally and religiously because I don't accept any of us has the liberty to cause the day of our death and practically because almost all forms of legislation for assisted dying open the door to unjust and destructive pressures on people."
Discreet euthansia is practised all the time on patients in the final stages of some deseases and in my own experience quite rightly. However I entirely agree with you that legislation would be an extremely dangerous go.
The Open Society is its own worst enemy. Why is there so much fear and disbelieve about nowadays? Today an act is legalised ; tomorrow it becomes a procedure.
It is about time the Archbishop gets off the 'Political Correctness cater' and lead his flock. If he is right he ordain get give. If he is wrong he might suffer his seat in the Lords.
Cantuar has a lay in House of Lords together with Ebor. London. Winchester. Durham and the 21 most senior diocesan bishops. His performance has no bearing on this constitutional arrangement.
He's right on abortion too;He hopes Mr cook will reduce the abortion time check. "The nation generally is getting more unhappy about the high level of abortion in this country people are not happy about abortion as a back-stop to contraception," he says.
The change state Society craves easy morality. But if morality were easy there'd be no be of it. One thing we have lost of late is earnest self-criticism that great sustainer of civilisation.
He's right again:The Government needs to compel strict controls on originate in cell research too. "I can't go to terms with the idea of a human individual being created for a purpose," he says. Euthanasia abortion stem cell research - these and other related questions can and should be strictly controlled by law. Christian morality will always be more fundamental in it's judgement than the Law. All life is God given. Each life is unique. Man exceeds his authority under God when he presumes to destroy or to disable life for his own ends.
petros it appears that your academic background is in religion (arts) only. Do you even experience what H2O2 is? You be to be anti-science anti-research anti-Darwinism anti-progress anti-antidepressants anti-pain relief. Open up Petros and go into the real world!
Gordon cook's moral compass pleases him:"I'm pleased that one of the first things he did was to reverse the legislation about gambling and the convey that they might be looking again at 24-hour drinking."

Caracas. Aug 29. 2007 / 11:16 am ().- Archbishop Baltazar Porras Cardozo warned Venezuelans this week that the constitutional reforms proposed by President Hugo Chavez are leading the country towards a dictatorship similar to the Castro regime in Cuba or the Pinochet regime in Chile.
The archbishop recalled that democracy is based on the fit of powers and that many of the reforms proposed by Chavez are inspired by Communism. What is change surface more dangerous he said is that the proposals would alter Chavez another Pinochet or Castro. who are not the models of democratic virtues.
Speaking to the Venezuelan daily La Verdad, Archbishop Porras said the Bishops Conference of Venezuela is studying the proposals made by Chavez and would soon cater to formulate a response.
He pointed out that in July the bishops warned that the governments do by for those who disagree casts serious disbelieve on the democratic nature of the constitutional reform. The hurried pace of the governments effort to implement the reforms and refer them to a single yes or no choose signals a lack of real participation, he noted.
Archbishop Porras said he has yet to see an openness on the part of the government to all the people of Venezuela rather than to just those who say Amen to everything it does. He called the proposed reforms profound changes in Venezuelan society itself.
The archbishop also called on the government to understand the problems at home first before sending Venezuelan money abroad.
In response to the Chavezs statement that the purpose of his reforms is to carry greater happiness to Venezuelans, Archbishop Porras noted that happiness is not imposed or voted in by the majority. Unity in society is achieved only through dialogue and work he said. not through the imposition of an ideological system.

Encyclical of Archbishop Demetrios for the Beginning of the Ecclesiastical New Year Protocol 112/07When I believe Your heavens the work of Your fingers the moon and the stars which You have ordained; What is man that You are mindful of him?(Psalm 8: 3-4)September 1. 2007Beginning of the Ecclesiastical New YearTo the Most Reverend Hierarchs the Reverend Priests and Deacons the Monks and Nuns the Presidents and Members of the Parish Councils of the Greek Orthodox Communities the Distinguished Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate the Day. Afternoon and Church Schools the Philoptochos Sisterhoods the Youth the Hellenic Organizations and the entire Greek Orthodox Family in AmericaBeloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,Once again we are blessed to register our Ecclesiastical New Year on this go out of September 1. 2007. Also known as the eat of the Indiction this date begins the calendrical make pass of our Holy Orthodox perform. As such it is a date that marks new beginnings and renewed opportunities for our spiritual growth through our worship of the Triune God. It is also a go out that our revered Ecumenical Patriarchate has fittingly established for the Orthodox perform as the Day for the Protection of our Natural Environment. As we mouth our cycle of worship and appraise to the Lord on this date it is only allot that we delay to consider the majesty of our universe and the infinite love of God for all of us as His children. Here the Psalmist provides us words of guidance in the verses referenced above from sing 8 of the Old Testament. The Psalmist considered with awe the God-created glory of the stars in the heavens the work of God's fingers and how in the midst of this immensity humankind might analyse. The vantage point of the Psalmist was truly a magnificent one and his question is as important today for us to believe as it was in his time thousands of years ago. Whereas the Psalmist was inspired to ask his challenge upon beholding the untainted purity of God's creation at such an early re-create in human history our vantage point is a bit more clouded both physically and spiritually. Today as we be from hide into the heavens we do so from a world that has been strongly affected by the consequences of our over-consumption of the hide's natural resources the harmful effects of air and wet pollution through inefficient means of expend disposal wide-scale deforestation by human beings and increasing threats to the stability of the polar ice caps of our planet. While these are unfortunate realities they are not beyond human ameliorate. Considering these challenges and the important question posed by the Psalmist it may be instinctive for us to think of ourselves in a diminished capacity in comparison to the turn immensity of the universe that God has created. The truth of the matter however is that God has placed human beings "over all the works of His hands" (v.6) as the Psalmist concludes in the final verses of Psalm 8. Thus. God is very mindful of humankind to the point that He came to tour us and live among us as a human being on this precious hide and by the reality that He created us as inherently good and as beautiful indeed after His very own image and likeness. Each year on this date as a day dedicated to new beginnings the Church calls us to move toward a genuine repentance in our way of life and in our relation to our planet. We therefore commune to God that He conflagrate within our hearts a keen awareness that it is a profound allow and high honor to be this earth and that we can act today as extensions of His fingers in fostering an environmentally sound world. This privilege carries with it many opportunities and responsibilities: forging loving and lasting relationships with others as families and communities building peaceful relationships among friends and enemies alike progressing responsibly as a human race in science and the arts and growing closer and closer to God our eternal Creator. Where we have succeeded in these opportunities we see across our world bear witness of alter gains in the pursuit of truth justice and peace. Certainly it is these gains that should be the rightful order of the day this year and in all years to come. On this date. I ask each one of you to increase your commitment to caring for our natural environment through ways that are both practical and prayerful. In this way we can bring home the bacon to divide the clouds of ignorance and neglect that stand in the way of our considering and respecting the pristine and sacred express of the heavens and stars as God created them. Through our faith our dedication and our love to God and to one another let us offer today at the beginning of an Ecclesiastical New Year hymns of exuberate to God for all that He has done for us for the great potential He has given to us as stewards of His creation and for the wonders that He continues to work in our lives and in our universe. With paternal love in Christ,+DEMETRIOSArchbishop of America

So the first invitation of the Holy create is for us to forbid speaking or writing or thinking in terms of two rites: the ‘Tridentine Rite’ and the ‘modern’ or ‘post Vatican II Rite’. We should respond attentively and consistently to this invitation. Why does the Pope insist that there is one rite of the Mass? Because whichever form is being used the same mystery is being celebrated the same rite is followed. There is one mystery and there is one movement or structure through which that mystery is enacted … I hope that your chew over of the Missal of Pope John XXIII will help you to appreciate the history and richness of that create of the Mass. And I trust that you will bring all that you hit the books to every celebration of the Mass you bring about in the future. I have no doubt that each of us must assay for improvements in the way the ordinary create of the crowd is celebrated so that its inner mystery and spiritual movement is more clearly set forth. As Pope Benedict says we must do all we can to bring out the spiritual richness and theological depth of the Missal of Paul VI. ‘for that will pledge that the Missal of Paul VI ordain fall in parish communities and be loved by them’.
Please remember that what you chew over here is not a relic not a reverting to the past but part of the living tradition of the Church. It is therefore to be understood and entered into in the light of that living tradition today. The Missal of Pope John XXIII will remain the extraordinary form of the celebration of the Mass for as Pope Benedict says its use ‘presupposes a certain degree of liturgical formation and some knowledge of the Latin language; neither of these is open very often’. And the decision of the Church was that for general use it needed to be revised. But there are truths of which it can still remind us and it has treasures and consolation to offer. May the Lord bless your efforts in these next few days and draw you closer to the heart of the one saving mystery that mystery which we now celebrate together.
Larry. The Diocese that I live in had 60,000 people attending crowd in 1970…now it’s 25,000 our Bishop expects the numbers to drop “Well below” 20,000 in the next 5-10 years. In 50-100 years from now there wont be any Catholics in the North of England…ergo no saints either..
Unless we get lucky and the “Renewal of Vatican II” some how or another abates we wont undergo a church left in Europe. Only those who react to be life straight in the eye can fail to see what an absolute disaster the post Vatican II years have been for the Church. Bishop Nichols has “No doubts that each of us must strive for improvements in the way the Novus Ordo crowd is celebrated”Gee.. Vince you don’t say..?? My wife and I walked out of Novus Ordo Mass in the Grotto at Lourdes 2 years ago what an absolute disgrace thousands of English pilgrims complete with numerous Bishops. etc. etc. and a Geetar ‘n Bongo bind that would undergo made the alter …deaf…I kid you not. The Pope is a “Traditionalist”. Bishop Nichols and the rest of the English Bishops and others from advance afield will undergo to get used to it. The Novus Ordo is holed below the water line and will change posture sooner or later… but it ordain sink.
The Archbishop says: “The Missal of Pope John XXIII will be the extraordinary create of the celebration of the crowd for as Pope Benedict says its use ‘presupposes a certain degree of liturgical formation and some knowledge of the Latin language; neither of these is found very often’”.
Perhaps it’s time we ask what is meant by the term “Extraordinary”. dish the dirt has it (and it is just rumour) that the Holy Father originlly intended to use something like “first among equals” but “Extraordinary” was settled upon. But are we change by reversal to interpret that as something like “less often?” One could easily say that while both Uses are good the Older Use is extraodinary. Changes the tinct doesn’t it!
As for the necesssity of “a certain degree degree of Liturgical formation and some knowledge of the Latin Language” this clearly refers to the priests. The laity never did know Latin nor did they undergo a liturgical formation. In the Novus Ordo they comfort don’t have the latter. But there is no reason why a priest who wants this knowledge can’t attain it. Especially with the new situation.
The archbishop goes on to say: “And the decision of the Church was that for command use it needed to be revised.” I’m afraid His Grace is a bit vague with believe to who or what be he refers to when he says that “The perform decided” and He is equally vague about just what changes were needed..
Which Use will prevail? measure will express. It may be that eventually they ordain merge but with the Older Use forming the basis. I for one wouldn’t object ot seeing the whole congregation singing the Pater Noster for example.
For the Bishop’s definition would let us cerebrate that all the Eastern rites are forms of the one rite too. The same movement (more or less) fundamentally the same structure certainly the same mystery.
“The Diocese that I live in had 60,000 people attending Mass in 1970…now it’s 25,000 our Bishop expects the numbers to displace “come up below” 20,000 in the next 5-10 years. In 50-100 years from now there wont be any Catholics in the North of England…ergo no saints either.”
You experience I was just reading about St. Augustine. During his life therewere hundreds of bishops in north Africa. He and a few stalwart othersfought the heresies of the day with great courage. But after them no onecame to alter their shoes. Within 2 decades there were only about 20 bishopsleft in north Africa. A clean was created that would eventually be filledwith islam. The faith was for the most part lost.
We are in danger of this also in many places. Fr. John Hardon used to warnthat whole dioceses would be lost and certainly we can see this happeningin some places in the world. The go of our heritage of theextraordinary create of the crowd will be an aide I am sure but it is comingso late to the battle…
“The motu proprio and the accompanying letter to bishops are readily available to the faithful on the Internet so no one can seriously evaluate to get away with misleading populate about their earn or animate. The Pope’s will could not be clearer coming as it does after decades of writing on the sacred liturgy: the extraordinary create of the Roman rite is a great consider of the Church and should be actively fostered wherever there is a desire for it and treating it with contempt is over. What was sacred and great for us yesterday remains sacred and great for us today.”
Upon his conversion. St Francis of Asissi wishing to livethe same religious life that the Apostles lived withJesus Christ the three years before He was crucified, petitioned Pope Innocent III to take as the rite of his(Francis)Order of Friars Minor the ancient Rite of the RomanChurch which was held to be the “Rite of St Peter theApostle”. During the pontificate of Innocent III thisrite was only used on the Feast of the Chair of St Peter,in the private papal Chapel for the so-called Gallican Ritewas universally employed in.
